Preview: Pakhtakor Vs Al Ain

Both teams eye their first victory of the campaign.

Amid the timeless allure of Tashkent, where ancient Silk Road legacies meet Soviet-era grandeur and modern vibrancy, the Matchweek 6 fixtures of the AFC Champions League Elite take us to the Stadion Majmuasi in Tashkent where Pakhtakor Tashkent are set to lock horns against Al Ain.

Pakhtakor Tashkent currently sit 6th in the Uzbekistan Super League, having secured 11 victories from the 26 matches played so far. While their domestic campaign has seen moments of promise, their performance in the AFC Champions League has been far from satisfactory. Winless in their five group-stage matches, with three draws and two losses, the team teeters on the brink of an unceremonious exit from the competition.

Despite their struggles, Pakhtakor will be desperate to salvage their campaign as they prepare for their next challenge against Al Ain. The fixture offers an opportunity for redemption, and the Uzbek side will need to show resilience and tactical discipline to upset the odds.

The reigning champions of the AFC Champions League, Al Ain, find themselves in an unimaginable predicament, languishing at the bottom of the Group B points table. With just a solitary point to their name, their campaign has been a stark contrast to their triumphant run last season. Such underwhelming performances have left the Emirati giants on the brink of an early and unexpected exit from the competition.

As they prepare for their next fixture, the reigning champions will need a complete turnaround, both in spirit and strategy, to salvage their pride. Their fans will be hoping for a resurgence worthy of their champion pedigree, but the road ahead is steep and unforgiving.

About AFC Champions League Elite:

History

The AFC Champions League Elite (abbreviated as the ACL Elite) is an annual continental club football competition organised by the Asian Football Confederation, and contested by Asia's top-division football clubs. It is the most prestigious club competition in Asian football, played by the national league champions (and, for some nations, one or more runners-up) of their national associations.

Introduced in 1967 as the Asian Champion Club Tournament, the competition rebranded as AFC Champions League in 2002 following the merger of the Asian Club Championship, the Asian Cup Winners' Cup and the Asian Super Cup. It was rebranded again in 2024 to its current name.

A total of 24 clubs compete in the league stage of the competition, divided into East and West regions (12 teams each). The winner of the AFC Champions League Elite qualifies for the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup, and also for the next edition of the AFC Champions League Elite league stage if they have not already qualified through their domestic performance.

The most successful club in the competition is Al-Hilal with a total of four titles. Al Ain are the current champions, having beaten Yokohama F. Marinos in the 2024 final.
